Every year, with the onset of warm days, I gather my whole family and friends in the country or in the courtyard of the house. We celebrate the approach of summer and fry a delicious barbecue. In these pleasant moments, we often go into the house to grab something. After that, the corridor is full of insects ... Of course, you can always take a fly swatter and save the room from annoying flies, running after each. But if you, like me, want to save your time and energy, then a fly trap will be the best solution. This option is much more effective than a fly swatter, in addition, a trap can be made with your own hands!
“In fact, you don’t have to spend money on additional materials, because you probably have everything you need at home. And when the trap is full, just throw it away! ”- recommends the author of this technology, William Quinn.
- 100 g chicken
- 1 paper towel
- 1 plastic canister with handle
- 1 plastic bottle
- 200 ml cold water
- fresh litter
Mr. Quinn uses the corpse of a dead chicken as a decoy. After all, chicken fat is a powerful means of attracting flies.
However, the author of this article does not agree with such a barbaric method and suggests replacing chicken with 150-200 grams of old chicken meat.
Place the meat in a canister.
Use a plastic milk container and an old plastic bottle to base the trap.
Make a side hole in the canister, insert the neck of a plastic bottle into it. So the flies will fall into the trap. The smell of rotting chicken fat will attract them.
Pour water into the canister so that it reaches a height of about 3 cm. After that, do not forget to tighten the lid of the upper hole!
For a second fly trap, use fresh litter instead of chicken fat.
Always wash my hands after such procedures!
A few days later, chicken fat began to rot, and it became an excellent bait for flies. The result of the experiment in the second version, which lasted 3 weeks, can be seen at around 2:25 of this video. Flies buzz near this trap.
To see how the whole process of making a trap goes, watch this video.
Flies, falling into a trap, die. As you can see, this is a fairly effective method that will help you to spend summer days quietly in your yard.
A huge disadvantage of this method is the smell emanating from the trap, so it should never be placed indoors!

Are flies dangerous?
Insects, even in small numbers, are dangerous. They cannot cause physical harm to humans, as their oral apparatus is not suitable for this. The exception is the tsetse fly. From her bite, a person dies. However, representatives of this species live on another continent (in Africa).
The neighborhood with widespread flies causes some inconvenience, since their large concentration worsens the sanitary condition of the object. The main danger of flies is that they carry pathogens that provoke serious diseases: sepsis, tularemia, trypanosomiasis, anthrax. Insects often cause intestinal infections and, worse, they carry helminth eggs.
They carry diseases: anthrax, sepsis, tularemia, intestinal infections, as well as parasite eggs
You need to destroy insects with your own hands even with weak settlement, since their offspring does not die when it enters the human gastrointestinal tract, but continues to live. This causes various health problems: internal bleeding, pain, vomiting, diarrhea, high fever.
Preparatory measures before the fight
No fly exterminator will be effective unless all factors that attract these insects are excluded. The most common causes of their occurrence:
- Products in which the process of decay has begun, which often occurs during long-term storage under conditions of freezing temperature
- The secret of the sweat glands of man
- Wastes of life of warm-blooded creatures.
If you follow the rules of hygiene, take out garbage from home daily, store food in the refrigerator, remove animal waste products (domestic, domestic), then a flycatcher is not required. It is recommended to install mosquito nets on the windows.
The insect exterminator is presented in several versions:
This is a safe method for humans to fight. During operation it does not exude odors, however, it heats up very much. The electrical appliance operates on the basis of the principle of attracting insects using light radiation. In the process, heat is generated. An electric trap for annoying flies is triggered by close contact. To do this, insects must fly up to the device, as a result, they are exposed to high voltage and they die.
In contact with it, the fly is exposed to high voltage, dies and falls into the tray
From annoying flies, which is a ready-to-use tape. This option is sold in the form of a compact cylinder containing a strip with adhesive surfaces, which is rolled up.
The adhesive tape dries quickly, and the smell attracting insects evaporates. Requires frequent replacement.
Do-it-yourself fly traps. Such a bait from flies will cost cheap, and its structure varies. In any conditions, there is always the opportunity to make Velcro for flies with your own hands, because it uses primitive and common materials: thick paper, a plastic bottle.
In terms of efficiency, store adhesive tape and self-made Velcro / bait are equal, as they act on a single principle.
They cope with their task locally - in a particular area. So, the more such devices to install, the better the result.
Production in different variations
All traps for wasps and flies must contain bait. Usually it is a sweet product: jam, honey, sugar syrup. You can choose one of the ingredients or apply several at the same time.
To bait and improve the sticky effect, it is also better to use sugar syrup or honey solution.
The most popular for self-made traps for wasps and flies from a bottle and paper.
Main materials: kraft paper, scissors, lace / thread, sweet bait (for example, honey and sugar). Sequencing:
- Preparing the bait. You need to take equal proportions of sugar and honey (150 g), then add water (4 tbsp. L.). The mixture is heating. You need to wait until the ingredients dissolve.
- Kraft paper is cut. The shape of the trap for flies and wasps is determined independently. It can be stripes, squares, rectangles.
- Holes are made in the paper, thread / string is inserted.
- The product is processed with sugar syrup and left to dry (no longer than an hour), and then suspended.

Catching Drosophila with your own hands is quite possible in a simpler way. To do this, take a plastic bottle. Cut off the upper part along with the neck. Inside, sugar syrup or jam is poured. Rotten fruits are also used. The previously cut part of the bottle with a neck is installed on top. You can make your own version of the trap. In this case, instead of the upper plastic part, a sheet of paper folded with a cone is used. The main task is to make a small hole at the top of the cone.
The destruction of insects is carried out mechanically. A simple option is a rubber cracker for flies. You can make it yourself, which will require a piece of flexible rubber and a wooden plank.
It is necessary to cut out the key element of the fixture of a suitable shape and carefully process the wood from which the clapper handle is made. A decorative analog of this device is sold in hardware stores.
